The chronology replicated here is from the book Historical Atlas of the Great Khans. The numbers following the date are the page numbers in the book.

As noted in the introduction, The romanization of foreign names is a difficult problem. Many countries have adopted new systems in recent years, but a lot of the sources used older systems. I have tried to conform to the most current usage as best I could. I apologize for any inadvertent errors.

Mongolian names are written according to modern Mongolian spelling, using Mongol Wikipedia and a recent Mongol translation of the Secret History as guides, converted from the Cyrillic alphabet.

Chinese names are written using the Pinyin system. Place names are the names used at the time. Corresponding modern names of major cities are shown in the Index.

Korean names are written using the Revised Romanization system. Place names are the names used at the time. Corresponding modern names of major cities are shown in the Index.

Place names in the west are written using their modern names except for Constantinople.

Events are generally listed in chronological order. Due to the lack of exact dates for most events, there may be some events slightly out of sequence. This is more of a problem when events occur in different areas where it was sometimes difficult to merges the sequences together.
