The Rothstein family can be traced back to the eighteenth century (1700s) in Wiesbaum parish in the Rhineland. This is in the hilly region known as the Eifel. John Peter Rothstein immigrated to the United States in 1855 with his family. They were among the early settlers of Eden Lake and Munson townships in Stearns County, Minnesota. When the Sioux indian war broke out in 1862, they stayed put with other German pioneers and drove some indians off on one occasion. In 1871 Margaret Rothstein was introduced to Joseph Hopfner, a recent immigrant who had settled in Millerville, Minnesota. She returned there with him where they lived and raised a large family. There are now several hundred descendants in the USA and Canada. |
